Pterophyllum scalare var.
Also known as: Pinoy Angelfish, Blue Pinoy Angelfish, Pinoy Angel
Origin: Captive bred (originally Amazon basin, South America)
The Pinoy Angelfish originated from Southeast Asian breeding programmes and expresses an unusual concentration of electric-blue iridescent pigment cells (iridophores) across the head, nape, and upper flanks, areas that are typically silver-grey in standard angelfish strains. The blue colouration intensifies under directional lighting and brightens further when the fish is in breeding condition.
The genetic basis of the pinoy colouration involves enhanced xanthophore and iridophore expression combined with specific melanin distribution. It can be crossed with other colour morphs (e.g., pinoy koi, pinoy gold) to produce extraordinary combinations. Pinoy angels are prized as centrepiece fish and tend to command premium prices.
Care requirements are slightly more demanding than basic domestic strains — pinoy angels benefit from very high water quality and a diet rich in colour-enhancing ingredients to maintain their spectacular blue colouration.
Water: Temperature 24–28°C, pH 6.0–7.2, GH 2–10, KH 1–5; high water quality is essential to maintain blue iridescence intensity. Tank: 150 L tall aquarium; dark background and directed LED lighting best showcases the electric-blue colouration. Feeding: Premium cichlid pellets with astaxanthin and spirulina, frozen brine shrimp, bloodworm; feed 2–3 times daily. Breeding: Breeds as standard angelfish; pinoy × pinoy pairings produce consistently blue offspring. Compatibility: Suitable with peaceful medium-bodied community fish; keep single specimens or proven pairs.
