Serrasalmus piraya
Also known as: Piraya Piranha, São Francisco Serrasalmus
Origin: Rio São Francisco, Brazil
Serrasalmus piraya is a large, robust solitary piranha closely associated with the Pygocentrus piraya in the São Francisco basin and long confused with it in the literature. Adults develop a pronounced predorsal hump and a striking gold-orange ventral colouration that rivals the Pygocentrus in intensity.
Its large size and demanding care requirements place it firmly in the realm of specialist fishkeeping. Juveniles are attractively patterned with the typical dark spot and red-eye combination of Serrasalmus, maturing into impressive, large adults. Long-term care requires a dedicated, very large aquarium with exceptional filtration.
Piranha ownership restrictions apply in most regions; São Francisco species may have additional export limitations from Brazil.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, soft water preferred (2-8 dGH); related to the São Francisco endemic fauna which prefers moderately soft conditions. Tank: Minimum 600L for a single adult; powerful canister or sump filtration; minimal décor; acrylic preferred for large adults. Feeding: Carnivore; whole fish, large prawns, silversides; long tongs mandatory; feed every 2-3 days. Breeding: No captive records; solitary nature prevents pairing in normal setups. Compatibility: Solo housing only; São Francisco piranhas may be subject to export restrictions — verify legal acquisition before purchase.
