Moenkhausia pittieri
Also known as: Diamond Tetra, Pittier's Tetra
Origin: Venezuela (Lake Valencia and drainages)
Moenkhausia pittieri, the Diamond Tetra, is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular freshwater tetras. Originating from Lake Valencia and associated drainages in Venezuela, its entire body is covered in iridescent, diamond-dust scales that shift from silver to violet-green under changing light angles. Males develop large, elaborate dorsal and anal fins that dramatically amplify this shimmer. Despite its impressive appearance, it is an easy species to keep and breed, adapting well to a broad range of conditions. It is peaceful and works well in large planted community aquariums. A school of eight or more creates a dazzling, moving spectacle.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28 °C; soft to moderately hard. Moderately flexible water requirements. Tank: 80 L minimum; well-planted with open mid-water space and moderate lighting to showcase iridescence. Feeding: Omnivore; pellets, quality flake, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, and vegetable-enriched foods. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; spawns readily over fine plants in slightly acidic water. Fry raise on infusoria then nauplii. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with medium South American community fish.
