Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus
Origin: Indo-Pacific
The Pixy Hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys oxycephalus) features a distinctive white body with irregular red-brown spots and a pointed snout. It is an ambush predator that spends most of its time perched on coral heads or rocky outcroppings, darting out to snap up small fish and invertebrates. Hardy and bold, it makes an entertaining display fish, though its predatory nature means small ornamental shrimp are at risk. A good choice for a FOWLR or reef tank without cleaner shrimp.
Minimum 120 L. Provide coral heads or rocky perches. Feed frozen mysis, krill, and carnivore preparations. Will eat small shrimp and ornamental invertebrates — incompatible with cleaner shrimp. Reef-safe with regard to corals. Usually only one per tank unless mated pair. pH 8.1–8.4, salinity 1.020–1.025, temperature 22–27°C.
