Placidochromis electra

Placidochromis electra, the Deepwater Hap, has a fascinating ecological strategy: it follows large sand-sifting cichlids like Fossochromis rostratus and Taeniolethrinops to opportunistically pick up invertebrates disturbed from the substrate. This commensal feeding behavior makes it one of the more ecologically interesting Malawi Haps to observe in a community aquarium with compatible tankmates.

Dominant males are strikingly electric blue from head to tail — a uniform, saturated blue that rivals even the best Electric Blue Ahli specimens when in peak condition. The clarity of color against a white sand substrate is exceptional. Females are silver-grey. This species is found throughout Lake Malawi's sandy zones and is a popular choice for mixed Hap and Peacock displays.

Maternal mouthbrooder. Peaceful and non-aggressive toward most tankmates. Best kept with larger sand-sifting companions to allow expression of its natural commensal behavior. An accessible, peaceful, and highly attractive Hap recommended for intermediate Malawi keepers.

Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; pristine conditions; moderate filtration. Tank: 250 L minimum; fine sand floor; pair with sand-sifting species like Taeniolethrinops for natural behavior. Feeding: Carnivore pellets, frozen mysis and Artemia; will also opportunistically feed on disturbed substrate invertebrates. Breeding: Easy maternal mouthbrooder; females hold ~3 weeks; breed readily without intervention. Compatibility: Excellent with most Malawi Haps and Peacocks; peaceful toward all but conspecific males.
