Placidochromis phenochilus
Also known as: Star Sapphire Cichlid, Tanzania Star Sapphire, White-spot Hap
Origin: Lake Malawi, Tanzania coast
Placidochromis phenochilus 'Tanzania' is one of the most visually stunning cichlids from Lake Malawi and one of the most spectacular in the entire hobby. Adult males develop a deep royal blue body covered with hundreds of iridescent white-silver scale spots that catch and scatter light like a starry sky — an appearance that has made 'Star Sapphire Cichlid' an instantly recognizable common name.
The Tanzania form is the most commonly available and typically displays more intense blue base coloration than the Malawi form. It inhabits sandy lake floors where it follows sand-sifters in commensal fashion. In the aquarium it is a moderately sized fish, manageable in large tanks, that rewards excellent water quality with breathtaking display coloration.
Maternal mouthbrooder producing moderate broods. Females are grey-silver with subtle spotting. Males are moderately territorial toward conspecifics. One of the most recommended intermediate-level Malawi Haps for keepers seeking a true showpiece without the space demands of large predatory species.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; excellent water quality is essential to fully express the brilliant white spot pattern. Tank: 350 L minimum; fine sand floor; open swimming space; medium rockwork; one male per species. Feeding: Carnivore pellets, frozen mysis, Artemia; supplement spirulina; feed twice daily in moderate portions. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; females hold ~3 weeks; isolate brooding female for best fry survival. Compatibility: Excellent with Aulonocara, utaka, and medium Haps; avoid aggressive species.
