About

The Plakat (from Thai: short-fin fighting fish) represents the closest domesticated form to the original wild Betta splendens of Thailand. While centuries of selective breeding have produced the spectacular long-finned Halfmoon, Crowntail, and Double Tail varieties, the Plakat retains short, rounded caudal, dorsal, and anal fins more similar to the wild fish. This streamlined finnage makes the Plakat considerably more agile and active than its long-finned relatives.

Plakats were historically bred as fighting fish in Thailand, where short fins reduce the chance of injury during fights and increase mobility. Today, ornamental Plakats are bred in an extraordinary range of colors and scale patterns — iridescent, metallic, dragon scale, marble — while retaining their athletic short-fin profile. Color intensity and scale quality are often considered superior in Plakats compared to long-finned varieties.

In the aquarium, Plakats are more active and exploratory than their long-finned counterparts, using the full tank space rather than drifting near the surface. Their shorter fins are less susceptible to fin rot and physical damage, and they are generally considered hardier and easier to maintain in good condition. All the behavioral characteristics of male Betta splendens apply: territorial aggression toward other males, labyrinth breathing, bubble-nest building, and carnivorous feeding habits.

Care Guide

Tank Setup Minimum 20-liter for one male. Unlike long-finned bettas, Plakats can tolerate moderate water flow without fin damage — a small internal filter is fine. Heater maintaining 24–30°C. Secure, tight-fitting lid — Plakats are especially agile jumpers. Provide plant cover and hiding spots. The shorter fins mean less risk from sharp decorations, but smooth surfaces are still preferred.

Water Parameters pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–30°C. Soft to moderately hard water. Weekly 25–30% water changes. Zero ammonia and nitrite. Regular testing in smaller tanks.

Feeding Carnivorous. Quality betta pellets, frozen bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and Grindal worms. Feed once or twice daily in small quantities. Plakats are energetic feeders and will accept food eagerly at the surface and mid-water.

Aggression and Housing Same as all male Betta splendens — strictly solitary for males. Plakats can be more aggressive toward females than long-finned varieties and should only be paired briefly for breeding under close supervision.

Community Compatibility Can be kept with small peaceful fish, but their greater agility means they are more effective at chasing potential rivals or prey. Choose tankmates carefully — avoid brightly colored or long-finned fish.

Breeding Bubble-nest builder. Males build large, elaborate nests. Courtship can be vigorous — monitor the female carefully and provide hiding spots. Remove the female after eggs are deposited.

Health Notes Generally the hardiest of all Betta splendens varieties. Shorter fins reduce fin rot risk significantly. Monitor for velvet and ich as with all bettas.

Long-term Notes Plakat Bettas are the most physically robust betta variety for long-term care due to their short, low-maintenance fins. With appropriate temperature, clean water, and a varied carnivore diet, they regularly achieve the upper end of the 2–4 year lifespan. Their greater agility and activity level compared to long-finned varieties makes regular enrichment particularly important for their mental wellbeing.
