Betta splendens
Also known as: Plakat Betta, PK Betta, Short-fin Betta, Fighting Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
Plakat bettas were the original form used in traditional Thai fish fights, and today they are prized for their vigour, health, and hardiness compared to long-fin varieties. Their short fins make them faster swimmers and less susceptible to fin damage and disease. They are extremely active and entertaining to keep.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — tolerates a wider range than long-fin varieties. Tank: minimum 20L, secure lid essential — plakats are exceptional jumpers. Feeding: carnivore — betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, mosquito larvae; two feedings daily. Behaviour: males are highly aggressive — one per tank; much more active than long-fin bettas. Compatibility: compatible with peaceful community fish; very effective at chasing tank mates.
