Atractosteus spatula
Also known as: Alligator Gar, Platinum Alligator Gar
Origin: Mississippi River basin and Gulf Coast states, USA; and Mexico

Atractosteus spatula is North America's largest freshwater fish, native to the slow-moving rivers, bayous, lakes, and estuaries of the Gulf Coast states — from the Mississippi River basin south to Mexico. In the wild, adult Alligator Gars can exceed 2.5 meters and weigh over 100 kg, making them among the largest freshwater fish in North America. The Platinum variant is a leucistic or albino color form with a white to cream body and pink to orange eyes, developed through selective breeding.
Ancient in origin (the gar family has changed little in over 100 million years), Atractosteus spatula retains numerous primitive characteristics: heavily armored ganoid scales that interlock like chain mail, a heterocercal tail, highly vascular swim bladder used for atmospheric air breathing, and the long, alligator-like snout packed with long teeth — giving the species its common name.
Juveniles are commonly sold in the aquarium trade and grow rapidly — reaching 30–50 cm within the first year under good conditions. Within 2–3 years, they outgrow all standard aquariums. Adult housing requires tanks of thousands of liters or large, specialized outdoor pond facilities in appropriate climates.
Alligator Gars are obligate piscivores that consume any fish and many invertebrates they can fit in their mouths. They are not community fish at any life stage.
Alligator Gars are hardy and adaptable: pH 6.5–8.0, hardness 5–20 dGH, and temperatures 12–30°C. They tolerate poor water quality better than most fish due to their atmospheric air breathing ability, but large individuals produce enormous waste volumes requiring exceptional filtration.
Juveniles (under 30 cm) can be temporarily kept in 200–400 liter aquariums. Adults require custom facilities of 10,000+ liters or large outdoor ponds. This is not a suitable long-term aquarium fish for most private keepers — please research the full adult requirements before purchase.
Feed live or frozen fish (goldfish, tilapia, lance fish), large prawns, mussels, and quality large carnivore pellets. They strike at prey from ambush with explosive speed. Feeding frequency decreases with age — adults may require only 2–3 feedings per week.
Alligator Gars will consume any fish or invertebrate that fits in their mouths — including tankmates. They must be housed alone or only with species completely safe from predation (which in practice means nothing when adults).
Buyers must be fully aware of the eventual size of this animal before purchase. Many are abandoned when they outgrow their facilities. Please only purchase if you have confirmed long-term housing capacity for a very large fish.
