Platinum Bichir

The platinum or albino Polypterus senegalus is a captive-bred colour mutation of the standard grey bichir, produced by selective breeding from albino founders. Its body is white to pale yellow with no visible dark pigmentation and characteristic pink-red eyes. It is among the most widely available polypterid variants and is produced in large numbers by commercial breeders in Asia and Eastern Europe. Despite its dramatic appearance, it is identical in care requirements to wild-type P. senegalus: it needs surface access for air breathing, a fine substrate, carnivore diet, and an escape-proof lid. It is one of the best first bichirs for newcomers to the polypterid hobby due to its hardiness, moderate adult size, and striking appearance. Long-established and well-documented captive track record.

Water: 26–30°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; highly adaptable to a range of tap water conditions. Tank: Minimum 200L, fine smooth substrate, caves and driftwood, very secure heavy lid to prevent escapes. Feeding: Carnivore; bloodworm, earthworms, prawn, sinking carnivore pellets; primarily nocturnal feeder. Breeding: As for standard P. senegalus; albino offspring require albino x albino or carrier pairing. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium to large fish; predatory toward small fish, shrimp, and invertebrates.
