Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Platinum Guppy, White Guppy, Snow White Guppy
Origin: Ornamental variety of Poecilia reticulata — wild form from Trinidad, Venezuela, Guyana, Barbados

The Platinum Guppy is a selectively bred color variety of Poecilia reticulata that has been developed for maximum silver-white to platinum body coloration — essentially a metallic white fish with a clean, gleaming appearance. Depending on the specific breeding line, the tail fin may remain white or platinum, or may be combined with other colors (orange, red, blue) creating 'platinum + tail color' varieties.
The 'platinum' characteristic refers to the dense distribution of guanine crystals beneath the skin that creates the brilliant metallic silver-white appearance. This is distinct from albinism or leucism — platinum guppies typically have normal dark eyes rather than the red or pink eyes of true albinos.
Male Platinum Guppies display the characteristic elaborate tail fin and body ornamentation of fancy guppies, with flowing fins in various shapes depending on the specific strain (delta, veil, sword, lyretail, etc.), all set against the clean platinum-white body. Females are larger, less colorful, and display the characteristic guppy body shape.
As with all Poecilia reticulata varieties, Platinum Guppies are livebearers that give birth to fully-formed fry, are easy to breed, and are entirely peaceful community fish.
Platinum Guppies share the care requirements of all fancy guppies: pH 6.8–8.5, hardness 8–25 dGH, and temperatures 22–28°C. They prefer slightly hard, neutral to alkaline water and adapt well to a range of conditions. A small amount of aquarium salt (1–2 tsp per 10L) is beneficial.
A minimum 40-liter aquarium with dense plantings for female cover and fry refuge suits a small group well. Gentle filtration — sponge filters prevent fry loss. Good water quality through regular changes maintains the pristine fins and metallic coloration.
Feed quality flake food, micro pellets, baby brine shrimp, daphnia, and spirulina-based foods. The metallic platinum coloration is maintained best with high-quality, varied nutrition.
Platinum Guppies are entirely peaceful. Compatible with corydoras, small tetras, small rasboras, mollies, platies, and other peaceful community fish. Avoid nippy species that target elaborate guppy fins. Maintain 2–3 females per male to distribute breeding pressure.
Breeding is prolific. Provide dense plant cover (Guppy Grass, Java moss) or a separate breeding/rearing tank for fry survival. Population management may be needed in established tanks.
