About

The Platinum Molly is an ornamental color variety of Poecilia sphenops (the Short-finned or Common Molly) developed through selective breeding for uniformly white to platinum-silver body coloration across both body and fins — creating a clean, gleaming all-white appearance. The 'platinum' coloration is created by dense iridescent guanine crystal deposition beneath the skin surface.

Poecilia sphenops is native to freshwater and brackish environments from Mexico through Central America and into northern South America — coastal rivers, streams, and estuaries with moderately hard to hard, slightly saline water conditions. The natural wild type is olive-green; all the ornamental colors (black, dalmatian, gold dust, platinum, etc.) are products of selective breeding.

Females are larger and rounder than males; as livebearers, they give birth to 20–80+ fully-formed fry after a 4–6 week gestation period. The male's modified anal fin (gonopodium) is used for internal fertilization — a distinguishing characteristic of all Poeciliidae.

Platinum Mollies, like all mollies, are unique among common freshwater aquarium fish in their tolerance of and preference for slightly brackish or high-mineral water. Adding small amounts of aquarium salt significantly benefits their health and reduces susceptibility to disease.

Care Guide

Platinum Mollies thrive in hard, slightly alkaline water: pH 7.5–8.5, hardness 15–30 dGH, and temperatures 24–28°C. Adding aquarium salt (1–3 tsp per 10L) significantly benefits health and is highly recommended. In fully freshwater setups, harder, higher-mineral water is preferred.

A minimum 80-liter aquarium with dense plantings, good filtration, and regular water changes suits a small group. Plants and floating vegetation provide female refuge and fry cover. Sponge filtration prevents fry loss.

Feed a varied diet with strong plant-based components: spirulina flakes, algae wafers, blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach), supplemented with quality flake, daphnia, and brine shrimp. Mollies graze on algae and require vegetable matter for optimal health.

Platinum Mollies are peaceful community fish compatible with other mollies, guppies, platies, swordtails, and other hard-water species. Maintain 2:1 female-to-male ratio to distribute male courtship pressure. Males may occasionally be boisterous toward females.

Breeding is prolific — provide dense plant cover or a separate breeding tank for fry survival. Population management may be needed. Weekly water changes of 25–30% maintain water quality.
