Notropis chrosomus var.
Also known as: Platinum Rainbow Shiner, Rainbow Shiner variant
Origin: Color variant of Notropis chrosomus — wild form from Coosa and Alabama River systems, Alabama, USA

The Platinum Rainbow Shiner is a color variant of Notropis chrosomus, the Rainbow Shiner — a cyprinid native to the river systems of Alabama and adjacent southeastern United States, particularly found in the Coosa and Alabama River drainages. The 'Platinum' designation refers to an enhanced silver-platinum base coloration compared to the standard wild-type form.
Notropis chrosomus is one of North America's most spectacular native fish. During breeding season, males develop extraordinary coloration: the back becomes vivid blue-green, the sides display pink to rose-red flush, and the cheeks turn brilliant metallic orange. These breeding colors combined with the platinum-silver base of this variant create a spectacular iridescent display.
Like all Notropis species, N. chrosomus inhabits clear, cool, fast-flowing streams with rocky substrates and good oxygenation — typical of the Appalachian highland river systems of Alabama. It is a schooling, pelagic fish that feeds in mid-water on small invertebrates and organic matter.
In the aquarium, Rainbow Shiners are best suited to cool, well-oxygenated tanks with good water movement, making them ideal for temperate setups without heaters in cooler climates. Their spectacular breeding colors in males make them extraordinary display fish when properly conditioned.
Platinum Rainbow Shiners require cool, clean, well-oxygenated water: pH 6.5–7.5, hardness 5–15 dGH, and temperatures 10–22°C. They are strictly cool-water fish that are stressed by sustained temperatures above 23°C. Good water flow, surface agitation, and high dissolved oxygen are essential.
A minimum 100-liter aquarium with moderate to strong current, open swimming space, smooth rocks, and fine gravel or sandy substrate suits a group of 8–10. Avoid warm-water setups — these are temperate fish suitable for unheated aquariums in cool indoor environments.
Feed quality flake food, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods: daphnia, brine shrimp, small bloodworms, and micro worms. Their breeding coloration is enhanced by protein-rich varied diet and cooler, well-oxygenated water.
Compatible with other cool-water species: hillstream loaches, White Cloud Mountain Minnows, cool-water danios, and other temperate stream fish. Avoid tropical species that require warmer temperatures.
Keep in groups of at least 8 for natural schooling behavior and to observe male breeding color displays. Water changes of 25–30% weekly with cool, well-oxygenated water maintain ideal conditions.
