Platytaeniodus degeni
Also known as: Degen's Cichlid, Shell-Crusher Victorian
Origin: Lake Victoria, East Africa
Platytaeniodus degeni is one of the most ecologically specialised Victorian cichlids, with hypertrophied molariform pharyngeal teeth adapted for crushing the shells of molluscs. This dentition places it in a functional guild similar to snail-eating cichlids from Lake Malawi and Tanganyika, demonstrating convergent evolution across the African rift lakes. The species is rarely available in the hobby and is considered scientifically important as a model for studying convergent trophic evolution.
In the aquarium, P. degeni requires a diet that includes hard-shelled invertebrates such as snails to maintain pharyngeal tooth condition and provide appropriate jaw exercise. Standard cichlid pellets and frozen foods supplement the diet. The species is moderately large and aggressive and should be kept only in a well-managed Victorian or specialist cichlid aquarium.
Aquarists keeping this species are advised to maintain records and participate in captive breeding programs, as wild populations may face pressure from the same threats affecting other Lake Victoria cichlids.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 7.0-8.5, hard alkaline; meticulous water quality management. Tank: 200L minimum; robust décor resistant to rearrangement by a powerful fish. Feeding: Snails as primary dietary supplement; cichlid pellets and frozen invertebrates. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; requires patience and a settled, structured environment. Compatibility: Advanced Victorian-only tank; do not mix with small or delicate species.
