Peckoltia sp. (L040)
Also known as: Pleco L040, L040 Pleco, Tocantins Reticulated Pleco
Origin: Rio Tocantins, Brazil
The Pleco L040 is an attractively patterned loricariid from the Tocantins basin of central Brazil. Its stout, compact body is covered in a fine reticulated network of pale lines on a dark background, creating an intricate mosaic-like appearance. It belongs to a group of moderately sized plecos that are appreciated for their interesting patterning without being as demanding as some of the extreme high-flow Xingu species.
L040 is an omnivore that grazes on algae and biofilm while also accepting prepared foods. Offer algae wafers, spirulina tablets, blanched vegetables, sinking pellets, and occasional frozen protein foods. Driftwood is an important component of the setup, providing both nutrition and essential hiding spots. Moderate water flow and clean conditions suit this species well.
This species is moderately peaceful and can be kept in large community aquariums with robust South American fish. Provide multiple cave structures if keeping more than one pleco, and avoid housing with very aggressive species that might outcompete L040 for food or territory.
Water: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 25–29°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8; moderate flow, clean conditions. Tank: 150 L minimum; driftwood, smooth rock caves, moderate current. Feeding: Omnivore; algae wafers, blanched veg, sinking pellets, occasional frozen bloodworm. Breeding: Cave spawner; conditioning with improved diet and water quality may stimulate spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with most robust South American community species.
