Pocillopora damicornis
Origin: Indo-Pacific (tropical reef flats)
Pocillopora damicornis, the Cauliflower Coral, forms bushy, rounded clusters of warty branches covered in tiny, visible polyps. It is one of the most widely distributed SPS corals in the Indo-Pacific and one of the hardiest SPS species in the hobby — commonly recommended as the true entry-level SPS coral for reefers. The green form displays vivid green polyps over pink-brown branches and grows vigorously under moderate to high light.
Medium-high PAR (150–300). Moderate to strong flow. Alk 8–10 dKH, Ca 400–450 ppm, temp 23–28°C. Tolerates moderate nutrient levels. Releases planulae larvae that can settle and grow as new colonies throughout the aquarium — considered invasive in some reef systems; manage by removing settled babies as needed. Hardy and fast-recovering from minor RTN events. Excellent choice for SPS beginners.
