Microglanis poecilus
Also known as: Poecilus Bumblebee Catfish, Guiana Bumblebee Catfish
Origin: Guiana Shield
Microglanis poecilus originates from rivers of the Guiana Shield region including Suriname and French Guiana. It is morphologically very similar to M. iheringi but can be distinguished by subtle differences in band width and body proportions. Like its congener, it is a small, stout catfish with bold contrasting bands.
In the aquarium it behaves identically to the common Bumblebee Catfish — retiring by day, active after dark, and peaceful toward fish too large to swallow. It appreciates caves and shaded areas and does well in a community tank with medium-sized inhabitants.
The Poecilus Bumblebee Catfish is less commonly imported than M. iheringi and is of particular interest to hobbyists who enjoy collecting micro catfish species. Care requirements are identical between the two species.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard; clean, stable conditions. Tank: Minimum 80L; provide caves, PVC tubes, or coconut half-shells; low to moderate lighting. Feeding: Carnivore; sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, Tubifex, brine shrimp; feed after lights-out. Breeding: Cave spawner; captive breeding possible in well-conditioned pairs. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium-sized fish; may consume fry and nano fish.
