Apistogramma phoxocephala
Also known as: Pointed-head Apisto, Phoxocephala Dwarf Cichlid, Needle-nose Apistogramma
Origin: Peru
Apistogramma phoxocephala is a distinctive Peruvian species whose most immediately recognizable feature is its unusually tapered, pointed snout — a morphological adaptation to picking invertebrates from narrow crevices in the leaf litter and substrate of its native blackwater streams. The name phoxocephala directly references this pointed-head characteristic.
Males display attractive yellow-and-black dorsal fin coloration with iridescent scale rows along the flanks and vivid blue cheek markings. Females are smaller and assume the characteristic yellow-and-black breeding dress common to many Apistogramma when guarding eggs.
This species is moderately demanding, requiring soft, acidic conditions and a thoughtfully arranged aquarium with multiple hiding spaces to accommodate its natural foraging behavior.
Water: Soft, acidic — pH 5.0–6.5, temperature 24–28°C, low TDS. Tank: 60 L with fine sand substrate, leaf litter, and narrow driftwood crevices for foraging. Feeding: Small invertebrates that fit its narrow mouth — Artemia, micro-worms, Daphnia; fine pellets accepted. Breeding: Cave spawner; female guards fry; moderately demanding. Compatibility: Small peaceful tetras and pencilfish; avoid competitors for bottom space.
