Synodontis angelicus
Also known as: Polka-dot Catfish, Angelicus Synodontis, Angel Catfish
Origin: Africa (Congo basin)
Synodontis angelicus is a prized species from the Congo River basin, regarded by many aquarists as the most attractive member of its genus. Its deep black base colouration contrasted with large, evenly distributed white-to-cream spots creates a dramatic polka-dot appearance that makes it immediately recognisable. It is nocturnal and somewhat secretive but becomes increasingly bold as it settles into a well-furnished aquarium.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 5–15). Tank: 200 L minimum; spacious caves and driftwood; subdued lighting suits this nocturnal species. Feeding: Sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen bloodworm, and shrimp; feeds primarily at night. Behaviour: Nocturnal; territorial with conspecifics; generally ignores dissimilar species. Compatibility: Excellent with medium to large cichlids and other robust African community fish.
