Synodontis polli
Also known as: Poll's Synodontis, Polli Catfish
Origin: Africa (Lake Tanganyika)
Synodontis polli is endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa and is named for Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll. Its silver-grey body densely covered in fine dark spots gives it an attractive, understated appearance. It is well-adapted to the extreme chemistry of Lake Tanganyika — hard, highly alkaline water — making it an ideal companion for Tanganyikan cichlid biotope setups.
Water: 24–27°C, pH 7.5–8.5, moderately hard to hard (GH 10–20); Tanganyikan chemistry required. Tank: 150 L minimum; rocky décor with caves; sandy substrate areas. Feeding: Sinking pellets, algae wafers, frozen bloodworm, shrimp, and meaty frozen foods. Behaviour: Nocturnal to crepuscular; active and curious; may be territorial with conspecifics. Compatibility: Natural companion for Tanganyikan cichlids such as Julidochromis and Lamprologus.
