Polypterus ansorgii
Also known as: Ansorge's Bichir, Ansorgii Bichir
Origin: West-Central Africa
Polypterus ansorgii is one of the less commonly encountered bichir species, originating from the rivers and swamps of West-Central Africa. It displays an attractively mottled olive-brown to grey body with irregular darker patches, lending it a camouflaged appearance perfectly suited to its natural substrate environment. Mature adults are solid and muscular, with the characteristically prehistoric armoured appearance shared by all bichirs.
Like all Polypterus species, Ansorgii requires a large aquarium with excellent cover at the surface — bichirs breathe air using a primitive lung and must be able to access the water surface easily at all times. The tank should be very well covered with no gaps, as bichirs are persistent escape artists. Sand or smooth gravel substrate, dim lighting, and hiding spots complete the setup.
Polypterus ansorgii is an opportunistic carnivore that accepts frozen fish, earthworm, prawn, and meaty pellets. It can be housed with large, robust tank mates but will eat anything fish-sized that fits in its mouth.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 25–30°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8. Tank: Minimum 300 L, sealed lid with no gaps, smooth substrate, caves and driftwood for shelter. Feeding: Carnivore; frozen fish, earthworm, prawn, and large sinking carnivore pellets. Breeding: Egg scatter in dense vegetation; soft slightly acidic water; male wraps female during spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with very large robust fish; predatory toward anything fish-sized.
