Polypterus mokelembembe
Also known as: Mokelembembe Bichir
Origin: Upper Congo Basin
Polypterus mokelembembe is one of the most recently scientifically described bichir species, formally named in 2004 from the upper Congo basin. Its common name references the legendary cryptid of the Congo — an apt nod to its own obscure discovery. The body is grey-brown with pronounced dark saddle markings along the dorsal line, giving it a bold and distinctive appearance compared to more uniformly coloured relatives.
Housing and care requirements are identical to other medium Polypterus species: a large, tightly covered aquarium with surface air-breathing access, smooth substrate, hiding areas, and stable soft to moderately hard water. This species is rare in the trade and commands significant collector interest.
Polypterus mokelembembe is an enthusiastic feeder once settled, accepting meaty frozen foods and sinking pellets. Its relatively moderate size and calm disposition make it manageable for experienced Polypterus keepers, and it can be kept alongside other similarly sized bichirs with care.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8. Tank: Minimum 250 L with sealed lid, smooth substrate, and multiple hiding structures. Feeding: Carnivore; frozen fish, earthworm, prawn, and large sinking carnivore pellets. Breeding: Egg scatterer; soft acidic water and conditioning with live foods required. Compatibility: Peaceful with large robust fish; avoid housing with small fish.
