Polypterus ornatipinnis
Origin: Congo Basin, Lake Tanganyika basin
Polypterus ornatipinnis, the Ornate Bichir, is one of the most beautiful members of its genus, featuring an intricate black-and-yellow/cream marbled pattern. A large predatory fish from Central and East African rivers, it breathes air via a primitive lung. Hardy and long-lived with a prehistoric appearance.
Requires a secure lid as it can escape. At least 200 L for adults. Sandy substrate, caves and driftwood. Feed meaty sinking foods: carnivore pellets, earthworms, mussel, fish flesh. Nocturnal feeder. Keep with fish too large to swallow. Tolerant of a range of water conditions.
