Polypterus polli
Also known as: Poll's Bichir, Polli Bichir
Origin: Congo River Basin, DRC
Polypterus polli is a medium-sized bichir from the Congo River basin distinguished by its moderately mottled olive-brown body with subtle irregular darker markings. Named after the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll, it was formally described relatively recently and remains uncommon in the aquarium trade, making it a valued find for serious bichir enthusiasts.
Care follows the standard bichir template: a large, well-covered aquarium with smooth substrate, surface air-breathing access, hiding places, and stable water quality. Polypterus polli is less aggressive than some larger bichir species and can be kept with robust, larger tankmates that are not small enough to swallow. Regular water changes and efficient filtration are important for long-term health.
Feeding is straightforward — like all bichirs, Poll's Bichir accepts meaty foods including frozen fish, prawn, earthworm, and quality sinking carnivore pellets. It is primarily a nocturnal feeder but learns quickly to associate feeding times with activity.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8. Tank: Minimum 250 L, gapless lid, smooth gravel or sand, caves and driftwood for shelter. Feeding: Carnivore; frozen fish, prawn, earthworm, and large sinking pellets. Breeding: Egg scatterer in dense vegetation; soft acidic conditions and conditioning with live foods required. Compatibility: Peaceful with large robust species; will eat small fish.
