Polypterus teugelsi
Also known as: Teugels' Bichir, Cameroon Bichir
Origin: Cameroon, West Africa
Polypterus teugelsi was formally described in 2004 from Cameroon's coastal rivers and represents one of the rarest Polypterus species in the aquarium hobby. It is characterised by a pale, almost cream-coloured body overlaid with irregular brown-grey blotches and mottling, giving each individual a slightly unique pattern. Its rarity alone makes it a prestige acquisition for serious bichir collectors.
Care requirements are consistent with other moderate-to-large Polypterus species: a well-covered large aquarium with smooth substrate, surface air access, and ample shelter. Given its rarity and collection source in Cameroon, specimens should be acclimatised with extra care using drip acclimatisation. Soft to moderately hard water with neutral pH suits it well.
Once settled, Polypterus teugelsi is a robust and straightforward carnivore that accepts frozen fish, prawn, earthworm, and large carnivore pellets. Acquiring healthy, well-conditioned specimens from reputable specialist importers is strongly advised.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8. Tank: Minimum 300 L with gapless lid, smooth substrate, caves and driftwood for shelter. Feeding: Carnivore; frozen fish, prawn, earthworm, and large sinking carnivore pellets. Breeding: Egg scatterer; very rarely attempted or achieved due to rarity of specimens. Compatibility: Peaceful with large robust species; predatory toward small fish.
