Ptychognathus barbatus
Also known as: Pom Pom Crab, Freshwater Pom Pom Crab
Origin: Hawaii / Indo-Pacific
Ptychognathus barbatus is a tiny freshwater or lightly brackish crab that holds small anemones or detritus clusters in each claw, resembling a cheerleader's pom poms. The anemones provide mutual benefit, helping the crab catch food particles while receiving transport and scraps. It is fully aquatic, tiny, and utterly fascinating to observe.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 7.0–8.0; fresh to lightly brackish; stable water parameters important. Tank: Minimum 30L with fine substrate, rocks, and moss to cling to; a well-planted nano tank works well. Feeding: Micro particles, fine powdered foods, and suspended matter caught with its claws; accepts nano food. Behaviour: Peaceful and active; waves its pom poms to snag food particles; completely harmless. Compatibility: Can be kept with small, peaceful nano fish and dwarf shrimp.
