Acipenser baerii
Origin: Russia, Central Asia (captive bred)
The Siberian Sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) is a large, armoured prehistoric fish widely kept in European display ponds for its dramatic, shark-like profile and impressive rows of bony scutes. Small display specimens already fully show the sturgeon body plan and glide effortlessly along the pond bottom, using sensitive barbels to locate food. Requires a high-oxygen, well-filtered pond and a specialist sinking sturgeon pellet diet. Can reach 2 m in length — requires a very large pond for the long term.
Minimum 5,000 L high-oxygen, well-filtered pond with sandy or fine gravel substrate. pH 7.0–8.0, GH 5–15, KH 3–8, temperature 4–22°C. Feed sinking sturgeon pellets and earthworms; avoid floating foods. High flow and oxygen levels critical — sturgeons are oxygen-sensitive. Not compatible with very small fish which may be accidentally vacuumed up.
