Acipenser ruthenus
Origin: Eastern Europe (captive bred)
The Sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus) is the most popular pond sturgeon for European garden ponds, remaining smaller than most other sturgeon species while tolerating a wide temperature range including cold winters. Its prehistoric armoured body, pointed snout, and shark-like profile make it an extraordinary pond feature that draws attention in any garden pond. Requires a well-filtered, high-oxygen pond with sandy or gravel substrate for bottom feeding with its sensitive barbels.
Minimum 3,000 L pond with excellent filtration and high oxygen levels. pH 7.0–8.0, GH 5–15, KH 3–8, temperature 4–22°C. Feed specialist sinking sturgeon pellets and frozen bloodworm. Sandy substrate beneficial for natural foraging behaviour. Avoid crowding — sturgeons need good water movement and high dissolved oxygen. Not suitable for heavily planted ponds with soft sediment.
