Cobitis pontica
Also known as: Pontic Spiny Loach, Black Sea Spiny Loach
Origin: Romania, Ukraine (Black Sea basin)
Cobitis pontica is a spiny loach distributed across the lower Danube delta and other Black Sea coastal drainages of Romania and Ukraine. It is a modestly patterned species with a series of small, rounded blotches along the lateral midline against a yellowish-cream background, superficially similar to C. taenia but distinguishable by scale counts and the shape of the lamina circularis on the pectoral fin of males.
In the aquarium, Cobitis pontica requires typical European Cobitis conditions: cool, clean, well-oxygenated water with deep fine substrate. It is an excellent burrower and may remain completely invisible for extended periods, particularly when newly introduced or during periods of low activity. A group of three to five will be bolder and more frequently visible.
This species integrates well into Romanian or Lower Danube biotope aquaria alongside native gobies, spined loach relatives, and small cyprinids. Feeding consists of micro sinking pellets, daphnia, cyclops, and occasional frozen bloodworm. Its subtlety and rarity in the hobby make it a specialist choice for the European freshwater enthusiast.
Water: pH 7.0–8.0, temperature 10–22°C, moderately hard, well-oxygenated. Tank: 80 L minimum; deep fine sand, some rock cover; cool and clean conditions essential. Feeding: Micro sinking pellets, frozen daphnia, cyclops, bloodworm. Breeding: Seasonal; cool period in winter recommended before spring warming. Compatibility: Peaceful with temperate European community fish.
