Puntius sophore
Also known as: Pool Barb, Sophore Barb, One-Spot Barb
Origin: South and Southeast Asia
One of the most widely distributed cyprinids in South and Southeast Asia, Puntius sophore ranges from Pakistan and India east through Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. It is a medium-small barb with a slender, silvery body and a prominent dark humeral spot just behind the gill cover. Males show warm golden tones on the flanks and slightly more intense fin colouration compared to the plumper females.
This is an adaptable, robust barb that tolerates a wide range of water conditions — from soft, slightly acidic streams to harder, more neutral rivers. In the aquarium it is best kept in groups of six or more, where it schools actively in mid-water. It is energetic without being aggressive, and its active movement through the tank makes it an excellent dither fish for other community residents.
Feeding Puntius sophore is straightforward: it accepts flake, micro-pellets, and small frozen or live invertebrates with equal enthusiasm. Its hardiness and peaceful temperament make it one of the best introductory barbs for aquarists new to Asian cyprinids.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.0–7.5, broad hardness tolerance; one of the most adaptable barbs. Tank: 80 L minimum; open swimming space, planted margins, moderate filtration. Feeding: Omnivore; flake, micro-pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp. Breeding: Prolific egg-scatterer; fine plants or mops; easy to spawn with water change stimulus. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with other small barbs, danios, rasboras, and tetras.
