Cichlasoma portalegrense
Also known as: Port Acara, Port Cichlid
Origin: South America
Cichlasoma portalegrense is a robust cichlid from the southern Brazilian and Uruguayan drainages of the La Plata system. Unusual among South American cichlids for its ability to thrive at cooler temperatures, it is a tough and undemanding species that would suit fishkeepers in cooler climates.
Water: 18-24°C, pH 7.0-8.0, moderately hard water preferred. Tank: Minimum 200L, robust décor with rocks and driftwood; avoid delicate plants. Feeding: Omnivore; cichlid pellets, earthworms, frozen bloodworm, blanched vegetables. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; territorial in pairs during spawning. Compatibility: Best with similarly sized subtropical fish; unsuitable for warm tropical tanks.
