Scleromystax prionotos
Origin: Brazil (Atlantic Forest coastal drainages)
Scleromystax prionotos is a rare and little-studied armoured catfish from the coastal Atlantic Forest drainages of Brazil, sharing the genus' preference for cool, well-oxygenated water. Its bold patterning and active personality distinguish it from its more common relatives. Due to rarity in the trade, it is a prized find for Scleromystax enthusiasts. Best kept in small groups and cooler aquariums — performance and colouration improve noticeably below 22°C.
Minimum 100 L with well-oxygenated, cool water (18–24°C). pH 6.5–7.5, GH 2–12, KH 0–6. Fine soft substrate for barbel protection. Feed sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm and tubifex. Benefits from groups of 3 or more despite solitary label; more active socially. Avoid heated tropical setups — this species declines above 24°C.
