Imparfinis pristos
Also known as: Pristos Catfish
Origin: Andean foothills, South America
Imparfinis pristos is a member of the family Heptapteridae and originates from fast-flowing, cool, well-oxygenated Andean piedmont rivers in Colombia and Venezuela. Its slim, almost transparent body with fine dark speckling and long barbels is well adapted to life in clear, swift streams.
In the aquarium it prefers cooler temperatures than most South American catfish and benefits from good water movement. It is a peaceful, unobtrusive species that coexists well with a variety of fish of compatible size. It tends to be more active at dusk and during the night.
The Pristos Catfish is rarely seen in the trade but is of interest to specialists seeking unusual small catfish with distinct ecological requirements. It should be provided with smooth substrate and hiding spots among rocks or roots.
Water: 20–24°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; well-oxygenated with moderate flow. Tank: Minimum 150L; smooth substrate, rock crevices or small caves, good water movement. Feeding: Omnivore; small sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, Tubifex. Breeding: No captive breeding records. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with medium-sized community fish; avoid very aggressive species.
