Procambarus clarkii
Origin: USA — originally SE USA; naturalised worldwide
The Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) is a large, hardy freshwater crayfish with vivid red colouration. An extremely effective scavenger and surprisingly intelligent, it can manipulate its environment. IMPORTANT: Will destroy aquatic plants and eat small fish and shrimp — suitable for species-only or fish-only setups.
Species-only or with robust large fish. Provide secure caves — moulds regularly and is very vulnerable to predation during moulting. Feed sinking catfish pellets, vegetables, and meaty foods. Cover tank tightly — expert climber and escaper. Hardy in a wide range of water conditions.
