Crenicichla proteus
Also known as: Proteus Pike Cichlid, Shape-shifter Pike Cichlid, Variable Pike Cichlid
Origin: Guiana Shield and lower Amazon basin
Crenicichla proteus is a wide-ranging, variable pike cichlid found across the Guianas and into the lower Amazon basin. Its name references the shape-shifting Greek sea god Proteus, alluding to this species' remarkable ability to alter its colouration and patterning intensity rapidly in response to mood, stress, or social interaction — a trait more pronounced in this species than in most congeners.
In practice this means C. proteus can appear strikingly patterned one moment and almost uniformly drab the next. When displaying to a rival or courting a partner, the lateral markings intensify dramatically, spots become sharply defined, and fin colouration flares. This visual versatility makes it a fascinating behavioural study in the aquarium.
At 22 cm it requires a 220 L species tank with the standard Crenicichla setup of sand, driftwood, and cave structures. Water should be soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic. C. proteus feeds well on frozen carnivore foods and has been bred regularly in captivity, making it an excellent choice for aquarists who want an engaging, behaviourally rich pike cichlid.
Water: pH 5.5–7.2 at 24–28°C; adaptable to a range of soft-to-moderate conditions. Tank: 220 L with sandy substrate, driftwood, and rock caves; leave open swimming lanes. Feeding: Frozen carnivore foods and quality pellets; a willing and straightforward feeder. Breeding: Cave spawner; regularly bred in captivity; strong colour signals reproductive readiness. Compatibility: Species pair; large robust fish as dithers in a generous tank.
