Protomelas similis
Also known as: Similis Hap, Blue-green Protomelas
Origin: Lake Malawi
Protomelas similis is closely related to the well-known Red Empress (P. taeniolatus) and shares a similar body shape, but displays a somewhat different color pattern with males showing a vivid blue-green metallic base with attractive red-orange fin highlights in full breeding condition. It is less frequently available in the trade than the Red Empress, making it a desirable find.
This species inhabits rocky shorelines and intermediate zones of Lake Malawi, feeding on aufwuchs and invertebrates from the rock surface. In the aquarium it is compatible with a wide range of similarly sized Haps and Peacocks, adding excellent mid-sized diversity to mixed Malawi displays. It is one of the more straightforward intermediate Haps to maintain.
Maternal mouthbrooder producing moderate broods. Females are plain silver-grey. Males are moderately territorial toward conspecific males. A highly recommended species for keepers looking to expand beyond the most commonly available Protomelas.
Water: pH 7.6–8.8, 24–28°C, GH 10–20, KH 10–18; clean alkaline water with moderate to strong filtration. Tank: 300 L minimum; rocky structure combined with sandy open areas; one male per species. Feeding: Omnivore pellets, spirulina wafers, frozen mysis; feeds at all levels; supplement vegetable foods. Breeding: Easy maternal mouthbrooder; females hold 3 weeks; breed readily in community tanks. Compatibility: Excellent with Aulonocara, Copadichromis, and medium Haps; avoid mbuna competition.
