Protomelas taeniolatus 'Red Empress' is one of Lake Malawi's most iconic haplochromines, with dominant males displaying a spectacular combination of iridescent blue-green on the head transitioning to a blazing orange-red body. This large, open-water hap is an active, relatively peaceful species that commands attention in any mixed Malawi display. Its hardiness and stunning coloration have made it a staple of the Malawi cichlid hobby worldwide.
Minimum 300 L with open swimming space. Malawi water: pH 7.5–8.6, GH 8–20, KH 5–10, temperature 24–28°C. Feed quality hap pellets, spirulina, and occasional frozen foods. Keep one dominant male with multiple females; pair with other peacocks and haplochromines in a community. Regular 30% water changes weekly. One of the more peaceful and beginner-friendly large Malawi cichlids.
