Protopalythoa sp.
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Caribbean
Protopalythoa sp. occupies a taxonomic position between Palythoa and Zoanthus, forming intermediate-sized polyps in shades of green, brown, and tan that spread as a loosely connected mat across the substrate. A forgiving reef coral that tolerates lower light and less pristine water quality than many zoanthid species, making it a solid entry-level choice. Colonies grow steadily and provide excellent habitat for micro-fauna and small invertebrates. Note: Palythoa/Protopalythoa contain palytoxin — handle with gloves and avoid contact with eyes.
Low to moderate light; tolerant of varied placements. pH 8.1–8.4, salinity 1.023–1.025, temperature 24–27°C. Low to moderate flow. Feed phytoplankton or reef roids occasionally for faster growth. Handle with gloves — palytoxin present. Place on isolated rubble to control spreading. Fragging straightforward with scissors; wear protection.
