Geophagus proximus
Also known as: Proximus Eartheater, Araguaia Eartheater
Origin: Brazil (Araguaia drainage)
Geophagus proximus from the Araguaia drainage is a close relative of the Tocantins populations but is distinguished by subtle differences in lateral-line scale counts and a slightly greener iridescent sheen on the flanks. It inhabits sandy river margins and slow channels of the Araguaia, one of Brazil's largest rivers. Like all Geophagus in the Surinamensis group, it is a prolific sand sifter and delayed mouthbrooder, forming loose social aggregations. It is a durable and adaptable species, tolerating a moderately wide range of pH and hardness, and is one of the more beginner-friendly larger eartheaters. Provide fine sand at least 5 cm deep, open swimming areas, and stable water temperature. Groups of five or more produce the most natural foraging and spawning behaviour. Excellent with large tetras and peaceful catfish.
Water: Soft to moderately hard; pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 24–29 °C. Tank: 280 L+; fine sand, open areas, driftwood optional. Feeding: Quality sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, artemia, daphnia. Breeding: Delayed mouthbrooder; group spawning; stable temperature is key. Compatibility: Excellent with large tetras, eartheaters, and peaceful catfish.
