About

Geophagus proximus from the Tocantins and Araguaia river systems is one of the larger and more commonly available eartheaters. Despite reaching 30 cm, it has a notably peaceful temperament for its size and can be maintained with a wide variety of robust tankmates. Its olive-green and gold flanks are adorned with iridescent scale rows that catch the light beautifully.

This species is a prolific sand-sifter, taking large mouthfuls of substrate and releasing them through its gill rakers after extracting edible matter. A deep sand substrate of at least 10 cm is therefore essential. The constant substrate movement also means plants must be secured or replaced with robust anchored species.

Geophagus proximus is considered one of the better beginner eartheaters given its hardiness, size tolerance, and forgiving nature with water chemistry. It responds well to group living and pairs can be successfully bred in the home aquarium.

Care Guide

Water: 25-29°C, pH 6.0-7.2, soft to moderately hard (2-12 dGH); tolerant but appreciates clean conditions. Tank: Minimum 350L; 10 cm+ fine sand substrate; open midwater swimming space essential for this large species. Feeding: Quality sinking pellets, cichlid granules, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia. Breeding: Biparental mouthbrooder; spawns on flat substrate; both sexes carry fry through multiple handoffs. Compatibility: Peaceful for size; good with large tetras, other Geophagus, non-aggressive cichlids, and large catfish.
