Pseudocrenilabrus nicholsi
Also known as: Nichols' Dwarf Mouthbrooder, Nicholsi Cichlid
Origin: Congo & Victorian basin
Pseudocrenilabrus nicholsi is a small, brightly coloured cichlid from rivers draining the Congo-Victorian watershed border region. Males in breeding condition are among the most colourful small African cichlids, displaying electric blue cheeks and operculum against orange-red fins and a yellow body. The combination is striking for a fish of only 9 centimetres.
Like its congener P. multicolor, P. nicholsi is a maternal mouthbrooder that breeds readily in the aquarium. It is slightly more demanding regarding water quality than multicolor but remains accessible to aquarists with modest experience. A well-planted or rocky aquarium of 80 litres or more provides an ideal home for a trio of one male and two females.
P. nicholsi is an omnivore that accepts a wide variety of small cichlid foods. Its manageable temperament, compact size, and outstanding colour make it one of the more underappreciated small African cichlids in the hobby.
Water: 22-27°C, pH 6.5-8.0, soft to moderately hard; weekly 25% water changes. Tank: 80L+; planted or rocky; hiding spots for females between spawning events. Feeding: Small cichlid pellets, crushed flakes, frozen baby brine shrimp, and daphnia. Breeding: Easy maternal mouthbrooder; isolate brooding female to protect brood. Compatibility: Species tank or small peaceful community; do not mix with aggressive cichlids.
