Pseudocrenilabrus philander
Also known as: Southern Mouthbrooder, Philander Dwarf Cichlid
Origin: South & East Africa
Pseudocrenilabrus philander, the Southern Mouthbrooder, is the most widely distributed member of its genus, ranging across south and east-central Africa in rivers draining toward the Indian Ocean and the East African rift system. Males are attractively coloured in blue-green with yellow-orange accents and develop vivid nuptial colouration during breeding. The species is exceptionally hardy and adaptable, tolerating conditions from soft acid to hard alkaline water.
As with all Pseudocrenilabrus, P. philander is a maternal mouthbrooder. Broods are small by cichlid standards, and females can be seen carrying fry visibly in the buccal cavity for two to three weeks. The species breeds very readily in the aquarium and is one of the best first cichlid breeding projects for new aquarists.
P. philander is a peaceful-to-mildly aggressive species that can be kept in community aquariums with other small, non-aggressive fish. Its combination of hardiness, colour, and breeding accessibility makes it one of the most recommended small African cichlids for hobbyists of all experience levels.
Water: 20-27°C, pH 6.5-8.5, broad tolerance; standard weekly water changes. Tank: 80L+; planted or rocky; female hiding spots essential. Feeding: Small cichlid pellets, crushed flakes, frozen small invertebrates. Breeding: Very easy maternal mouthbrooder; excellent beginner breeding project. Compatibility: Peaceful community or species tank; avoid housing with aggressive cichlids.
