Glossolepis pseudoincisus
Also known as: Pseudoincisus Rainbowfish, False Red Rainbowfish
Origin: Indonesia (West Papua, Idenburg River)
Glossolepis pseudoincisus is visually very similar to the flagship G. incisus (Red Rainbowfish) and was long confused with it before being properly separated as a distinct species. It originates from the Idenburg River (Taritatu River) drainage in West Papua — a different river system from G. incisus — and males develop the same deep crimson-red body colouration and arched profile at maturity, making the two species nearly indistinguishable to the casual observer.
For the serious Glossolepis enthusiast, maintaining separate, pure populations of pseudoincisus and incisus is important to preserve the integrity of both species. The care requirements are essentially identical — warm, moderately hard, slightly alkaline water in a spacious, well-filtered aquarium. This species is considerably rarer in the hobby than G. incisus and requires more dedicated effort to source.
Glossolepi pseudoincisus breeds in standard egg-scattering fashion and the fry are similar in appearance and behaviour to those of G. incisus. Clear provenance labelling when distributing fry is essential to prevent accidental hybridisation within the hobby.
Water: pH 7.0–8.0, temperature 22–27°C, moderately hard; identical requirements to G. incisus. Tank: Minimum 250 L; open swimming space; strong filtration; weekly 25–30% water changes. Feeding: Quality flake, pellets, live and frozen invertebrates; varied diet supports full crimson development. Breeding: Egg scatterer; label offspring clearly to avoid mixing with G. incisus stock. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent in large rainbowfish communities; stunning paired with silver or blue species.
