About

Pseudotocinclus tietensis is a monotypic genus-and-species combination endemic to the Tietê River basin in São Paulo state, Brazil — one of the most heavily urbanised and industrially affected watersheds in South America. This conservation context gives P. tietensis a significance beyond the aquarium: it is a flagship species for the biodiversity of a river system that has suffered severe degradation, and hobbyist interest in the species supports awareness of its plight.

The Tietê River has clear to moderately turbid headwaters in the Atlantic Forest escarpment, where P. tietensis presumably persists in less disturbed tributaries. These upland streams are cool, well-oxygenated, and moderately hard — conditions shaped by the crystalline basement rocks of the Serra da Mantiqueira. The species grazes diatoms and green algae from rocky substrates, using its sucking disc to maintain position in moderate current.

In the aquarium, P. tietensis is a genuinely rare species that requires moderately cool, well-oxygenated, clear water to thrive. Its care overlaps with that of O. flexilis and other cool-water loricariids — it is not suitable for warm tropical setups and performs best in temperatures of 18–24°C. Its conservation significance makes it a compelling choice for dedicated loricariid collectors who want to maintain a species with real-world biological importance.

Care Guide

Water: Moderately soft to hard at pH 6.5–7.5 and 18–24°C; well-oxygenated, clear water with good current; moderately cool temperatures essential. Tank: 60 litres minimum with smooth rocks, moderate flow, and live plants. Feeding: Diatoms and algae primary; supplement with algae wafers and blanched vegetables placed in current. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful with cool-water community species; ideal with O. flexilis and temperate tetras.
