Pseudotropheus socolofi
Also known as: Pindani, Socolofi Cichlid, Powder Blue Mbuna
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Pseudotropheus socolofi, commonly known as the Pindani, is a popular and widely available mbuna from Lake Malawi valued for its clean, solid blue colouration — both males and females are blue, with males slightly more intensely coloured. This lack of extreme sexual dichromatism makes sexing challenging without vent examination, but it also means the species is visually attractive as a group.
The Pindani is frequently recommended as one of the better starting mbuna for hobbyists new to the Lake Malawi cichlid hobby. While still territorial and aggressive in mbuna fashion, its aggression is typically less extreme than Melanochromis or P. elongatus species. A 1M:3–4F harem in a 200 L+ rocky tank is recommended. Females are maternal mouthbrooders holding eggs and fry for approximately 21–28 days. An algae-based diet and hard alkaline water are essential.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.8–8.5, hard (GH 10–25, KH 6–15); standard Lake Malawi chemistry with good filtration. Tank: 200 L minimum; rockwork providing multiple territories; less extreme rockwork requirements than most mbuna. Feeding: Spirulina flake and algae pellets as staple; occasional algae wafers; avoid animal protein to prevent Malawi bloat. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; both sexes blue making visual sexing difficult; female holds 21–28 days. Compatibility: One of the more manageable mbuna for community setups; compatible with moderate mbuna and some Aulonocara.
