Pseudotropheus sp. 'Acei'
Also known as: Msuli Acei Cichlid, Yellow-Fin Acei
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Pseudotropheus sp. 'Acei' Msuli is the Msuli Point locale form of the Yellow-Fin Acei Cichlid, one of the most popular mbuna in the aquarium hobby. Males display a brilliant violet-blue body with vivid yellow dorsal and caudal fin highlights. This locale form is collected from Msuli Point on the western side of Lake Malawi and may show subtle colouration differences compared to the more commonly available Ngara form.
The Acei Cichlid is unique among mbuna for its association with submerged wood (driftwood) and algae on logs rather than rocky substrates — a distinctive ecological niche. It is less aggressive than most mbuna and is one of the few mbuna species that can be successfully kept in small groups rather than strict harem structure. Females are maternal mouthbrooders holding for 21–28 days. A moderately algae-based diet suits this species well. Suitable for beginner mbuna keepers.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.8–8.5, hard (GH 10–25, KH 6–15); reliable hard water chemistry standard for Malawi. Tank: 200 L minimum; can include driftwood in addition to rockwork — unique for a mbuna; open swimming space appreciated. Feeding: Spirulina flake and pellets; algae-based diet with occasional frozen foods; more dietary flexibility than strict rock-grazers. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; female holds 21–28 days; one of the easier mbuna to breed in captivity. Compatibility: One of the most peaceful mbuna; can be kept with moderate mbuna, Aulonocara, and similarly peaceful Malawi species.
