Pseudotropheus sp. 'Acei'
Also known as: Ngara Acei Cichlid, Yellow-Fin Acei, Acei Cichlid
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Pseudotropheus sp. 'Acei' Ngara is the Ngara locale of the popular Yellow-Fin Acei Cichlid — the form most frequently encountered in the aquarium hobby. Males display striking violet-blue body colouration paired with bright yellow fins, creating a vivid two-toned appearance that makes this one of the most attractive mbuna available. The Ngara form is collected from the northwestern shore of Lake Malawi near the Ngara area.
The Acei Cichlid's association with submerged driftwood and algae-covered logs rather than rocky substrate makes it ecologically distinct among mbuna. It is notably less aggressive than rocky mbuna genera and tolerates group living better than most mbuna. Maternal mouthbrooding females hold eggs and fry for approximately 21–28 days. One of the recommended starting points for hobbyists new to Malawi cichlids, combining vivid colouration with manageable temperament.
Water: 24–28°C, pH 7.8–8.5, hard (GH 10–25, KH 6–15); standard Malawi water chemistry. Tank: 200 L minimum; include large driftwood pieces in addition to rockwork to replicate natural habitat; open swimming space. Feeding: Spirulina flake and algae pellets as staple; accepts small frozen foods; algae wafers on driftwood surfaces replicate natural feeding. Breeding: Maternal mouthbrooder; female holds 21–28 days; one of the more reliable and easy mbuna breeders in the hobby. Compatibility: One of the most peaceful mbuna; suitable with Aulonocara, gentle haps, and other mild Malawi cichlids.
