Pterophyllum altum
Also known as: Tank-bred Altum Angelfish, Captive Altum Angelfish
Origin: South America
Tank-bred Pterophyllum altum are produced from acclimatised captive stock and retain the hallmark tall profile, pre-dorsal notch, and attractive silver-black barring of the wild species. They are significantly hardier and more tolerant of slightly less extreme water parameters than their wild-caught counterparts, making them the preferred choice for most hobbyists. A tall aquarium with excellent water quality and peaceful tankmates is still required. In a well-maintained biotope they develop the same stately presence as wild specimens, though fin colouration may be slightly less vivid.
Water: 26–30°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft (GH 2–10); maintain high purity and low nitrates. Tank: Minimum 350L; tall format; peaceful tankmates only; avoid bright lighting and strong flow. Feeding: Carnivore; high-quality frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, and cichlid flake; small meals twice daily. Breeding: Can spawn in captivity on broad leaves or slate; both parents guard eggs. Compatibility: Peaceful; good with cardinal tetras, pencilfish, and other small, non-nippy Amazonian species.
