Pterophyllum scalare
Also known as: Manacapuru Angelfish, Red Shoulder Angelfish
Origin: South America
Collected from the Rio Manacapuru near Manaus, Brazil, this wild locale form of Pterophyllum scalare is one of the most sought-after angelfish among biotope enthusiasts. It develops vivid red-orange colouration in the dorsal and caudal fins that intensifies dramatically under tannin-rich blackwater conditions and appropriate lighting. The silver body with three bold bars provides a striking contrast. Wild-caught individuals require time to acclimatise but become robust once established. Tank-bred specimens from F1 stock from this locality are also available and adapt more readily.
Water: 25–30°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft (GH 2–10); blackwater conditions with catappa leaves enhance colour. Tank: Minimum 200L, tall format; driftwood, floating plants, and gentle filtration. Feeding: Carnivore; frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia, and quality cichlid flake; small frequent meals. Breeding: Spawns on broad leaves or cleaned driftwood; devoted parents in a stable, low-stress environment. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with cardinal tetras, pencilfish, and other soft-water Amazonian species.
