Pterophyllum scalare
Also known as: Peru Scalare Angelfish, Wild Peru Angelfish
Origin: South America
Collected from Peruvian Amazon tributaries, the Peru Scalare Angelfish presents the archetype of the species — clean silver body with three bold black bars and a characteristic golden sheen on the forehead. Peruvian wild-form angelfish are well regarded for their proportionally deep bodies and the cleanliness of their markings. They adapt well to a range of South American water conditions and are hardier than Altum or Leopold's angelfish. Ideal for an Amazon biotope alongside cardinal tetras, corydoras, and other soft-water species in a well-decorated tall aquarium.
Water: 24–29°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft (GH 2–12). Tank: Minimum 200L, tall format; Brazilian-style setup with driftwood and floating plants. Feeding: Carnivore; frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, white mosquito larvae, and quality angelfish pellets. Breeding: Reliable open spawner on broad leaves or flat surfaces; pair is highly attentive to eggs and wrigglers. Compatibility: Peaceful with appropriate-sized tankmates; small tetras may nip fins in large groups.
